What is a Professional Year Program?


A Professional Year Program is a structured professional development program that combines formal learning and workplace experience for international students who have graduated from Australian Universities. It offers an opportunity to experience a real Australian work environment and enhance skills. It is usually delivered over a 44 to 52-week period by approved providers. It is a combination of both coursework/ classroom study and internship. The overall aim of Professional Year is to help international students to become more employable in their field of study in Australia



Who is eligible for a Professional Year Program?

  • You must have completed a degree in Accounting, Computer Science or Engineering (or a closely related area) in Australia,

  • You must be below 50 years of age,

  • You must hold a Skilled - Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) or Bridging Visa A or C for an eligible visa type (Visa conditions must grant full work and study rights),

  • You must also have at least 12 months remaining on your visa from the date the program starts.

Engineering graduates who completed their degree at a recognised institution outside Australia are also eligible to complete a Professional Year Program in engineering. They must apply for a Skilled—Recognised Graduate visa (Subclass 476).



What are the entry requirements for the Professional Year?


Professional Year in Information Technology

  • Completed a recognised ICT-related degree in Australia (Bachelor's or Master's) a minimum of two years full-time study in Australia

  • Obtained or applied for a Graduate Visa (subclass 485) with a minimum 12 months validity

  • Have a valid minimum IELTS score of 6.0 no less than 6.0 in all 4 competencies or a PTE-A overall score of 50 with a score less than 50 or equivalent


Professional Year in Accounting

  • Completed a recognised Accounting degree in Australia (Bachelor's or Master's)

  • Have or applied for a Graduate Visa (subclass 485) with a minimum 12 months validity

  • Have a valid minimum IELTS score of 6.0 no less than 6.0 in all 4 competencies or a PTE-A overall score of 50 with no score less than 50, or equivalent

  • Must hold a Migration Skills Assessment outcome letter from an accounting professional association (CPA, CA, or IPA)


Professional Year in Engineering

  • A recognized bachelor's or Master's qualification in Engineering from an Australian Institution. For Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa holders (476) relevant Australian qualification is not required.

  • IELTS overall score of 6.0 no less than 5.0 in any component or PTE-A overall score of 50 with no band less than 36 or equivalent.

  • Graduate Temporary Visa (subclass 485) or Bridging Visa or Skilled Recognised Graduate 476 visa

  • Must hold a Migration Skills Assessment outcome letter from Engineers Australia


What Documents are required to apply for the Professional Year Program?

  1. Complete Application Form for the PY Program you want to apply

  2. Certified copy of your Passport

  3. Your CV or RESUME

  4. Evidence of your English Proficiency Level (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBIT, Cambridge Advanced English or Occupational English Test)

  5. Copy of your academic documents (Degree & Transcripts)

  6. Copy of your current visa

  7. A valid skill assessment from a relevant authority (for Professional Year in Engineering)
